The History of Inquisitions Database
This database is aimed to update all those interested in the history of the inquisitions from the late middle ages to the modern period. It provides a searchable repertoire of sources, bibliographies and iconographic materials on religious dissent and its repression in different periods and areas of the world. Users can intuitively browse through these items and conduct advanced research based on inquisitorial organization and chronology, typologies of materials, and specific keywords.
Sacred Fire: Inquisitions, Capital Punishment and Rites of Justice in Italy (13th-18th centuries)
The database Sacred Fire provides a catalogue of the victims of the Inquisition across the Italian peninsula, both in person and in effigy, excluding areas subject to the Spanish Inquisition (Kingdom of Sicily, Sardinia) and the Kingdom of Naples. It is designed as a valuable resource for historians studying the medieval Inquisition and the Roman Holy Office from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Each entry includes details on the victim’s identity and proceedings, along with relevant primary sources and secondary literature. The database contains only victims of clear biographical identifiability, for whom there is documented evidence of both the execution and the Inquisition’s involvement. Entries are compiled with the highest possible accuracy: where information is missing, this reflects the silence of consulted sources and limited available evidence. The database features standard and advanced search systems, enabling efficient navigation and targeted queries across multiple parameters (name, genre, place of origin, of the proceedings and the execution, last occupation, dates, tribunals involved, crime category, reason for conviction).
