- Notes for execution
Ottavio d’Arimini, apparently after having repented, was beheaded in prison by order of the Governor of Rome, who acted contrary to the wishes of the Congregation of the Holy Office, which had intended the execution to be public. Evidence of this conflict is preserved in the papal audience of 2 June 1597, when Cardinal Giulio Antonio Santoro reported what had happened to Pope Clement VIII. A record of this can be found in Vatican City, Archivio Apostolico Vaticano, Miscellanea Armadi, LII 21, c. 305v
